The Spaniards are reportedly weighing up a swoop for Red Devils misfit Rashford, who is out of Ruben Amorim’s plans.

The versatile United forward has just returned from a loan at Aston Villa, having declared that he was “ready for a new challenge” in December.

And he has even been keeping fit at Carrington while he hunts for a new club, with rivals Liverpool linked with a shock move yesterday.

A host of clubs have registered their interest in Rashford – however no cash offers have come in with Manchester United valuing him at £40million.

SunSport understands the striker hopes the club will give him the green light to go on loan again if no permanent deals can be made.

Rashford has long dreamed of turning out for Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

And that dream could become a reality as the Spaniards hunt for a new left-sider.

They had initially wanted Nico Williams, but he ended up signing a new contract with Athletic Bilbao.

Another target, Luis Diaz, is now being chased by Bayern Munich for big money.

And Rashford could end up being the man Barcelona pick to boost their attacking options.

However, legendary hitman Sheringham reckons a move to Spain would not be a just reward for Rashford’s antics.

The 1999 Treble clincher, who struck a 91st minute equaliser in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich just moments before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dramatic winner, feels Rashford’s push to leave his boyhood club is “soul destroying.”

Sheringham believes that given United’s current state, a move to Barcelona would definitely be a “step up.”

However, he feels Rashford is not deserving of that and hopes a transfer to Catalonia does not go through.

Sheringham told Sky Bet: “If you assess where Marcus Rashford is at, as a professional footballer, you strive as a youngster to get to the very top and play for clubs like Manchester United, and when you’re there, you appreciate it.

“You don’t throw it away and say you want to leave. From my perspective, if you go from United to Barcelona, that’s a step up he hasn’t deserved.

“I find the whole episode very soul-destroying, compared to the way I was back in the day and how I strove to get the privilege to play for such a huge football club.

“To hear someone talking the way he is talking, saying he wants out – I didn’t like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doing that at Arsenal, I thought it was soul destroying.

“I hope Rashford doesn’t get the move that he’s hankering for.”
