A 19-year-old Italian man has since been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to local reports, she had been seen with the man prior to the alleged attack.

Greek authorities launched an immediate investigation, which led to the arrest of the Italian national.

He was taken to the prosecutor’s office and is expected to appear before a judge on Thursday.

The alleged attacker has not been remanded in custody, according to local media reports, though police are continuing their probe.

Officers have urged anyone with information to come forward.

According to Greek outlet EPT News, the Italian man has been granted time to provide an apology before the investigative judge tomorrow.

The complaint, filed on July 13, claims that the young woman was raped by the suspect while the two were “having fun in the shopping mall area” of the island.

Corfu, known for its buzzing nightlife and sun-soaked beaches, draws around 500,000 British tourists every year – many of them young holidaymakers attracted to its party scene.

It comes as a string of recent incidents involving British tourists abroad have sparked growing concern.

In Portugal, two British men aged 27 and 29 reportedly drowned after jumping into a swimming pool in the party resort of Albufeira.

It is understood that a friend found them “lifeless” in the early hours of Tuesday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene around 4.30am but both men were pronounced dead shortly after.

Portuguese authorities are said to be investigating whether the pair could swim.

Cops have reportedly ruled out foul play, though a formal investigation has been launched by the country’s Policia Judiciaria at the request of local GNR officers.

It follows a recent discovery of a 21-year-old tourist’s body at the foot of a staircase in Albufeira’s old town.

That came just days after cops located the body of a Scottish tourist who had been missing for a week in Albufeira.

Greg Monks, 38, from Glasgow, had gone out drinking after flying to the resort hours earlier for a stag do.

He is thought to have jumped over a wall and fallen down a steep cliff after becoming disorientated as he tried to head back to his hotel.

The plant mechanic was found by police at the bottom of a ravine on Wednesday – just hours after the 21-year-old Brit was discovered.
