A MAJOR motorway was closed due to a “serious” incident – with cops later confirming a man had died.

Junction 1 to Junction 3 of the M2 between Strood and Chatham in Kent was shut from around 5.15am today.

Police, ambulance and National Highways workers were on the scene near the Medway Viaduct.

Kent Police later said a man in his 50s had died, with officers receiving reports of “concerns for the welfare of a person”.

A police spokesman added: “The man’s death is being treated as non-suspicious, and a report is being completed for the coroner.”

It is reported he may have fallen from a bridge, though this has not been confirmed.

Drivers were being diverted this morning, with delays on the A2 near Gravesend.

A National Highways statement had said: “The M2 in Kent is closed eastbound between J1 Three Crutches Interchange (Gillingham, Grain (A228) A289, Rochester, Strood A2)and J3 Bluebell Hill Interchange (Maidstone, Chatham A229; Channel Tunnel (M20)).

“Please note this incident also encompasses J2 Merrals Shaw Interchange (Rochester, West Malling A228).

“Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and National Highways are on scene with a serious incident.”
