How much will England or Spain receive if they win?

If the Lionesses can defend their trophy against world champions Spain, in the rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, they will send shockwaves through the footballing landscape.

Before the start of this year’s tournament, it was confirmed by Uefa that the 16 teams could secure a record prize pot of €41million (£34million).

ENGLAND VS SPAIN LIVE – LATEST UPDATES

It was a record move and saw an increase of 156% in the prize money offered at the previous  Women’s Euro in 2022.

When Sarina Wiegman’s England won the tournament in 2022, beating Germany to lift the trophy for the first time, the prize pot was only €16million.

It means that if England win the tournament on Sunday, they will take home up to €5.1million, over double the €2million they were awarded in 2022.

This top prize money also includes performance bonuses, which are added onto the €1.8million participation fee that is awarded to all teams involved in the tournament.

Are the men and women paid the same?

While the women have seen massive advancements in terms of equality both in national and international tournaments, the divide between the men’s and women’s remains large.

At the men’s Euro 2024, the prize pot was a whopping €331million, which is spread across the 24 teams involved.

It meant that the tournament champions, Spain, won €28.25million, a figure which is just over €10million more than the total pot of the women.

What’s more, the participation prize money for each team stood at €9.25million.

Safe to say there’s a way to go before complete equality at the international level.

Are England’s players paid per match?

In another major move for Uefa, they also confirmed that teams had to distribute between 30 to 40% of their prize money received at the tournament to the players.

This was the first time this rule came into effect at the Euros and reflected the decision made by Fifa ahead of the Women’s World Cup.

As a result, England’s players receive what is essentially a nominal fee of around £2,000 per match, which is the same as the men.

England men and women have been paid the same for their match fees since 2020.

According to The Guardian, the women will also receive a collective bonus of £1.75million if they win Euro 2025.

On the other hand, it was reported that the men’s team, which reached the Euro 2024 final last summer, would have shared a bonus pot of £14million had they beaten Spain in the Berlin final.
