THE horse ambulance was called into urgent action again at Goodwood – after an ‘unfortunate incident’ in the first race.

Trainer Andrew Balding’s three-year-old colt Tuscan Star appeared to pick up an injury in the 1m4f handicap.

“The outpouring, the messages have been unbelievable, I knew he was popular, there’s been well over 200. It means an awful lot, it’s helped me and helped the staff”

ITV Racing host Ed Chamberlin confirmed the horse, who was sent off 100-1 under jockey David Probert, was being driven back to the stables.

Goodwood was rocked yesterday by the death of legendary horse Trueshan in the feature race.

Jockey Hollie Doyle said she was ‘devastated’ by the loss of an icon, adding: “It doesn’t get any worse.”.

While trainer Alan King, who was fighting back tears live on ITV, said on Wednesday: “It was obviously very tough – but the outpouring of support has been unbelievable.

“It’s helped me and it’s helped the staff.

“What happened yesterday was a freak accident – it was just one of those awful things.

“It happens. It’s bloody awful but it happens.

“The vets were superb. I was on my way down to see him and I said, ‘please just hang on until I get there’.”

Tuscan Star was making his eighth career start having fired in a quick hat-trick of wins earlier this year.

He was bought for £27,500 in September 2023 and has won more than £19,000 on the track.

Thankfully, despite everyone’s worst fears, ITV later confirmed the horse appeared to be OK.

He will be returning to Balding’s Kingsclere yard for further treatment.
