A QUIRKY fairytale castle that has been dubbed the ‘Greek Disneyland’ has been left to rot for years following financial struggles to cover its maintenance.

Located in the fishing village of Agrili, in the Peloponnese, stands a wacky castle with creepy statues standing guard, built by an eccentric doctor in the 1960s.

Despite its medieval design, the strange building combines mismatched elements from history – from knights of the Middle Ages to the Trojan War and figures of the Greek Revolution.

While in the yard next to the castle, the figures of ancient gods Athena and Poseidon from Greek mythology are freaking visitors out.

Dr Charalambos Fournarakis (Harry Fournier), who has also built a mini version of the Eifel Tower in the nearby town of Filiatra, built the bizarre building initially as his main residence.

He said his goal was to build something to resemble the “stories grandmothers tell.”

Today the castle’s doors remain locked while it’s covered in graffiti and rubbish can be seen around.

While it has been left to rot today, the fairytale castle was once an actual castle with multiple corridors, rooms, arches, armour and vaults.

Throughout the years it was used as a venue for performances, a museum and a hotel.

But its future is doubtful as it has been left in decay since the local club managing it cannot afford to cover its maintenance.

Local authorities have held talks to discuss the possibility of reopening the castle in the near future as well as discussing the estimated cost for its renovation.

Meanwhile, an abandoned ghost town that was supposed to cost $1.6billion hasn’t been touched since 2008 when its developers landed themselves in big trouble.

An abandoned spy station where spooks eavesdropped on the Soviet Union has now become a gigantic canvas for street artists.

A racecourse once labelled the “most beautiful in the world” has come crashing down as punters mourned the ‘soul-crushing’ loss of one of their favourite tracks.
