AN Afghan convicted of trafficking migrants should not be extradited to Belgium due to mosquitoes in some jails there, a court has heard.

Ziarmal Khan, 25, was one of three men arrested in the UK last year after being tried in Antwerp in their absence.

He got three years for his role in moving migrants from Afghanistan into Europe, via Iran and Turkey.

Many were then put on small boats to the UK.

Khan also later came here from France and is now fighting extradition, saying Belgian jail conditions will breach his human rights.

Louise Willcox, for Khan, told Westminster magistrates’ court that many cells were overcrowded and added: “There is vermin, mosquito plagues, regular flooding.”

A judgment will be given on April 30.

National Crime Agency investigators have supported the Belgian investigation for around two years.

They supplied intelligence and evidence to the Belgian Federal Police around suspected members of the network.
