BBC pundits were aghast at an Ollie Watkins interview after England’s 1-0 win over Australia.

Watkins scored the sole goal in the win, expertly ghosting to the back post to tap into an empty net when the ball was played across the penalty box.

But the Aston Villa ace left BBC 5 Live host Darren Fletcher and pundits Stephan Warnock and Paul Robinson shocked following some “blasphemous” comments.

When speaking to John Murray after the match, Watkins was asked about his poacher’s finish for the match-winning goal.

The 27-year-old said: “Yeah they’re the best ones the little tap-ins.

“I’ll take it all day at the end of the day. It says your name on the Sky Sports app and that’s all that matters.”

After switching back to the studio radio, Fletcher joked: “John Murray there in conversation with the blasphemous Ollie Watkins.

“Of course, it’s on the BBC Sport app as well… He must have thought ‘I’ve seen John somewhere before’ and put two and two together and come up with five.”

Watkins’ latest England goal means he has now scored in back-to-back England appearances 563 days apart.

It marks him out as the player with the longest period between goals in consecutive appearances since Mike O’Grady between 1962 and 1969 (2,335 days).

The Villa forward has now made eight England appearances, scoring three times overall.

At club level, Watkins has finally found his scoring boots in the Premier League after a slow start to the season.

He has scored four goals in his last three league games, including a hat-trick against Brighton.
