THIRSK races have been hit by a big delay – after jockeys walked the track amid concerns over unsafe ground.

Sir Mark Prescott’s horse Conjecture slipped on the home bend around three furlongs from home in the second race at the North Yorkshire track on Friday.

Fortunately the Luke Morris-ridden 7-2 chance, a two-year-old filly, was able to stay on her feet but finished a well-beaten third.

A number of riders and trainer Ruth Carr made their way onto the racecourse to inspect the turn to ensure it was still raceable.

The fourth race of the day was due off at 3.38pm but was hit by a sizeable delay.

Although that contest is over the straight six furlongs so any worries over the condition of the turn shouldn’t affect it.

Fortunately for punters, trainers, jockeys and owners at the track, the ground was deemed safe enough to continue.

That was good news in particular for those running in the 4.38pm contest over 1m6f.

Although it was later claimed on Racing TV that that race – and the 4.08 over 7f – could still be called off.

Trainers were said to be ‘disgruntled’ that the 6f race – over the straight track – was subjected to a delay.
