The band revealed that Turner was diagnosed with glioblastoma in the fall of 2022.
“It is with the deepest sorrow that we inform everyone that our brother @britturner13 has moved on from this life,” the band said in a statement posted to social media.
“If you had the privilege of knowing Brit on any level, you know he was the most caring, empathetic, driven and endearing person one could ever hope to meet. Brit was Blackberry Smoke’s True North, the compass that instituted the ideology that will continue to guide this band.”
They went on to ask their fans for prayers for Turner’s friends and family.
Turner had been married to Shannon Sorrells Turner, who celebrated their anniversary in a touching Instagram post on February 25.
His wife uploaded a video that features a series of photos of the couple throughout their relationship.
“20 years married to the love of my life…this is what I get and I will happily take it,” she wrote.
“@britturner13 Happy Anniversary. Loving you is the easiest and most natural thing I do. When others say marriage is hard work we always say no, not for us. I will love you forever.”
Blackberry Smoke was first formed in 2000, with Turner as one of the founding members.
He played the drums for the southern rock and roll band and was considered “the heart and soul” of the group, according to Rolling Stone.
The band has seen several of their albums reach No. 1 on Billboard’s top country albums including Holding All the Roses and Like an Arrow.
Their 2015 album You Hear Georgia reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Chart.
Before his death, Turner continued to play and tour with Blackberry Smoke, according to Rolling Stone.
However, in December, it was revealed that he would be missing a number of shows to continue treatment for glioblastoma.
Thousands of fans and friends have flooded the comment section of Blackberry Smoke’s announcement on Turner’s death, extending condolences and prayers.
“My longtime brother has moved on. I am heartbroken and have been crying all night but i know he’s finally at peace. Long live Brit Turner,” singer-songwriter Butch Walker wrote.
“This is so sad news. RIP Brit Turner, such a talented drummer and great human being. My condolences to all the BBS family,” one fan commented.
“This one hurts. Praying for peace,” another chimed in.
Additional information on funeral arrangements is “forthcoming,” according to the band.
