Blaze erupts at ‘retirement property’ with smoke billowing into sky as firefighters rush to 4-storey block of flats

FIREFIGHTERS from at least six stations are tackling a blaze at a ‘retirement property’ in Essex.

The fire crews are tackling a large fire in the roof of the four storey Westcliff property.

The fire is ongoing at a property on Imperial Avenue in Essex

Witnesses have said that the flames are visible through the roof of the property on Imperial Avenue.

Video footage of the fire shows billowing smoke, as well as tall flames coming from the building.

A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters have been called to a fire in the roof of a four storey block of flats in Westcliff.”

The fire was reported at 12.12pm and is still being tackled, with an update at 1:25pm asking residents to close their doors and windows due to the smoke.

A tweet about the incident reads: “Huge fire in Imperial Avenue. Multiple fire engines, ambulances and police dash to scene.”

Crews from Basildon, Canvey, Chelmsford, Corringham, Orsett and Southend fire stations are attending.
