It is thought the schoolboy fell “between the tram and the platform” before the tram began to move, seriously injuring the youth.
Emergency services rushed to the horrific scene and raced the boy to hospital to receive urgent medical treatment.
The 11-year-old remains in the care of medics at the hospital and is in a stable condition, Greater Manchester Police said.
While police investigations into the horror were carried out a large cordon was put in place around the scene.
Roads were closed off and traffic was diverted as an air ambulance came in to land.
With a police investigation into the horrific incident ongoing, any witnesses have been urged to come forward and contact Greater Manchester Police immediately.
Officers were seen conducting their probe at the scene late into Tuesday evening.
They are keen to hear from anyone who may have dash cam or mobile phone footage of the horror.
Tram services to Manchester Airport were cancelled for the majority of the evening after the incident.
