The tragic man, aged 60, was assisted at the scene by emergency medical responders who tried to revive him.

He was pronounced dead after being rushed to Lagos Hospital, in Portugal.

Paramedics, firefighters and officers from Portugal’s PSP police force responded to the emergency call.

It was not immediately clear if any arrests had been made, but police have since confirmed that they have a suspect who is Portuguese.

Portuguese cops confirmed the man’s death, but were not able to say whether he lived in Portugal or was a British tourist visiting the area.

A PSP officer said: “He died in hospital in Lagos following an assault.

“We have a suspect who is Portuguese who is with police at the moment but I am not able to say whether he has been formally arrested at this stage.”

Another police officer said cops from Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria force were now working on the case.

They added that the police focus was on obtaining the evidence needed to take the principal suspect before a judge on Monday.

It is not yet clear if the assault took place inside a nightspot or in the street.

Police have not gone into details about the incident although the dead man is understood to have suffered severe head injuries.

Lagos is a town in southern Portugal’s Algarve region, known for its walled old town, cliffs and stunning beaches.

But it also boasts a vibrant nightlife, with beach parties and clubbing areas.

It comes as fears continue to grow for a missing Scottish holidaymaker who vanished during a night out with friends hours after flying to the Algarve on Tuesday.

Greg Monks’ worried sister Jillian sounded the alert on Thursday saying the Glasgow man had last been seen in the Portuguese party resort of Albufeira during a first night out.

And she described his disappearance in the Portuguese holiday hotspot as “completely out of character.”

She wrote on an Albufeira expat site: “My brother has not been since Tuesday evening. If you are currently there and have any information place contact me with any info.”

Alison Meechan Fraser, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, subsequently confirmed the 38-year-old had been reported missing and police were looking for him.

She said: “He was with a group of friends. All the other boys are at the accommodation.

“They all arrived Tuesday, went on a night out and none of them have seen him since late Tuesday/early Wednesday.

“It’s out of character, he’s 38 and named Greg.”

Jillian also confirmed her brother’s disappearance had been reported to the British Embassy as well as police and his hotel.

She said: “Please any info. We are desperate. Not like him to do this.”

In April 2024, a Brit tourist was found dead inside an Algarve holiday apartment.

The 30-year-old man was found alone inside his room with “a lot of vomit around him” by cops despite staying with a friend on the holiday.

The Brit was found at the four-star Orada Tourist Apartments, near Albufeira Marina, Portugal.
