She died of her injuries caused by drowning in the pool at a hotel in Morro Jable, where her family were on holiday.

Police initially gave the girl’s age as five – but later confirmed she was 11.

The tragic incident occurred at around 1.20pm, when emergency services received reports a lifeguard had pulled a child from the water.

She was resuscitated by one of the on-duty lifeguards before she was taken to the General Hospital on the island.

Owing to the severity of her condition, she was flown to another island on the Spanish archipelago for further treatment.

She was taken by helicopter to the Maternal and Child University Hospital of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

Doctors and nurses at the hospital battled in vain to save the youngster.

An air ambulance, two road ambulances and local cops rushed to the tourist complex on Avenida de Gran Canaria.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard said: “An 11-year-old British girl was taken to Fuerteventura Hospital on Thursday afternoon from a hotel in Morro Jable on the island’s south coast before being airlifted to the Maternal and Child University Hospital in Gran Canaria.

“The alarm was raised around 1pm on Thursday and the youngster had gone into cardiac arrest.

“The pool she was in was a small children’s pool which was only 30 centimetres deep.

“The autopsy will help determine whether she suffered some sort of indisposition or health problem which might explain why she got into difficulties in such shallow water.

“She died in the hospital in Las Palmas yesterday.”

Police said they would not be naming the hotel.

It is the fourth death of a minor by drowning in the Canary Islands so far this year.

The association, which is dedicated to the prevention of such incidents, has been recording the number of accidents since 2015.

Four deaths in a year is the highest figure recorded in the past decade.

In May, a four-year-old Brit boy drowned in a hotel swimming pool in Tenerife.

The horror unfolded in the resort town of San Miguel de Abona on the Golf del Sur.

According to Spanish outlet Telecinco, the boy was rescued from the pool by a lifeguard but was unresponsive.

A nurse from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) gave CPR instructions over the phone while first responders searched for a defibrillator.

Several hotel guests, including people who identified themselves as doctors, also rushed to help.
