The authority went bankrupt just weeks ago with a £760million debt.

The smart devices vanished between January 2020 and last month.

Birmingham Conservatives deputy leader Cllr Ewan Mackey said: “It’s disappointing to see money wasted like this.”

He added: “We need assurances that an assessment has been made to see if any personal data has been compromised and if so that action has been taken.

“Given the financial situation at the council, any wasted or lost money is a concern and we do know there are other examples where the Labour administration have made decisions which have cost the people of this city dearly.”

Jonathan Eida, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “These losses will heap further misery on council tax payers in Birmingham.

“With finances in the red and the authority now bankrupt, local residents will rightly ask how so many devices have been lost.

“Council staff must remember who pays for these devices.”
