One witnesses told how the man had been caught under the bus.

“We took one patient to a major trauma centre as a priority.

“We assessed and discharged the other patient at the scene.”

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Police were called at 12.52 on Monday, July 28 following a collision between a bus and a pedestrian on Regent Street.

“The pedestrian, a man in his 80s, was treated at the scene and taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service.

“His condition is thought to be life-threatening.

“This incident is ongoing and bus services in the area are on diversion. No arrests have been made.”

The London Fire Brigade told how two engines were dispatched to the scene, along with a fire rescue unit.

A spokeswoman said: “The Brigade was called to Margaret Street at the junction with Regent Street in Westminster following a collision between a double decker bus and a man.

“One man was trapped by the vehicle and was rescued by firefighters.

“Alongside a second man, he was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters made the scene safe following the collision and the duty of care was left with the Metropolitan Police Service.
