The fire broke out on Saturday while the ship, which has 30-restaurants, was still docked in Southampton.

Onboard sprinklers quickly extinguished the fire, a P&O spokesperson told The Mirror.

The incident did not delay the four-pool ship setting off to Hamburg, Germany.

Suites on Iona command up to £3,800 for a 14-night Christmas trip to The Canaries.

The same ship was involved in hunting the crew of the doomed Verity cargo ship who went overboard in the North Sea on Tuesday.

One person died and two others pulled from the water when the British-flagged vessel sank after colliding with cargo ship Polsie, 14 miles south-west of the German island of Helgoland.

Four were still missing when the search was called off on Thursday.

A P&O spokesperson said: “There was a fire in Iona’s atrium which was caused by a lithium battery on a mobility scooter.

“Thankfully it was swiftly extinguished by our fire detection systems.”
