A “CHEEKY” British boy drowned in a hotel swimming pool just one day into his first family holiday abroad, an inquest heard.

Kelan Logan-Derench was discovered in the water at the Mirette Hotel in Hurghada, Egypt, without his armbands on.

An inquest in Birmingham heard the five-year-old was pulled from the swimming pool but he tragically couldn’t be saved.

Senior coroner, Louise Hunt, recorded a verdict of accidental death.

She said: “Kelan was away on holiday with his family at the Mirette Hotel, Hurghada, Egypt.

“On November 25, 2023 at around 12.05 he was found at the bottom of the hotel swimming pool without his armbands.

“Resuscitation attempts were made and he was taken to the El Nile hospital where sadly he was confirmed deceased.”

A GoFundMe page was launched organised by Serena Whitehead, a friend of Kelan’s mother, shortly after his death.

She told how the youngster was just one day into the trip with his mum, sister and gran when the horror unfolded.

Serena wrote: “Kelan was a cheeky, mischievous, happy little boy, he was a younger brother and was about to become a big brother himself in February 2024.”

Kelan’s school New Hall Primary also paid tribute to the youngster.

Headteacher Becci Breedon said: “We offer our deepest sympathy to all those involved in this tragedy.

“Kelan was a bright, happy and energetic member of our school, he will be greatly missed and always remembered with affection.

“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family, loved ones, friends and the local community affected at this extremely sad time.”
