Now talkSPORT states initial talks are underway to get a deal over the line.
Manchester United want at least £40million.
However, Chelsea are hoping to hold off on finalising a price until the Benjamin Sesko transfer is done.
That is because the report adds that the Blues think United may be willing to lower their asking price once Sesko is confirmed as they will need to make the sale.
Sesko is understood to have picked United over Newcastle with both clubs pushing to land the Slovenian striker.
RB Leipzig accepted Newcastle’s bid of £72m plus £2m in add-ons.
United allegedly matched the total £74m offer – but with £65m up front and a further £9m in add-ons.

But while the Toon’s bid has been accepted, the player has his heart set on Old Trafford.
However, Ruben Amorim will hope to offset some of the cost by selling Garnacho.
The Red Devils slashed the asking price for the Argentine when it became clear he was part of the unwanted bomb squad of misfits – alongside Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia – who were left at home for the US pre-season tour.
Garnacho – who wore a Marcus Rashford Aston Villa earlier in the summer – fell behind new arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the pecking order.
His boss Amorim confirmed the eight-cap international has no future at Old Trafford and said: “Garnacho is a really talented boy but sometimes things don’t work out.
“You cannot explain specifically what it is.
“But I have the feeling that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership.
“And I can understand that. It’s not a problem.
“Sometimes you adapt to one guy, you have the connection. Other times, you want a new challenge.

“We try to make everything okay to all the parts, to the club, to the coach and to the players. It’s a natural thing in football.”
He added: “There are players that clearly show that they don’t want to be here and that is normal.
“It’s not that they’re bad and I’m good, or I’m bad and they’re good.
“It’s not that situation. It’s a simple situation that they want new challenges.
“If the market closes and they are still Manchester United players we as a club have to treat them in the same conditions.
“But at this moment I’m just working with the players I think are going to stay and the other guys are trying to find a solution for their careers.”
Villa, Atletico Madrid and Napoli have also been linked with the winger – but Chelsea appear to be in pole position after declining to sign Sancho permanently.
Garnacho, who posted a cryptic post on Instagram, scored 11 goals and chipped in with ten assists across 58 games in all competitions last season.
