A return to Leipzig is not thought to be high on Nkunku’s priority list, but it is clear the forward does not have a future at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea remain in talks with Leipzig over a deal for Dutchman Xavi Simons.

It is thought that the Bundesliga side value the playmaker at £60m.

His agent, Ali Barat, who has close ties to Stamford Bridge, is trying to break the stalemate between the clubs.

It is unlikely any move for Nkunku would be included as a swap deal for profit and sustainability reasons.

Nkunku has had a difficult time at Chelsea, suffering a serious knee injury on his first pre-season tour with the Blues.

The France international has 18 goals in 62 Blues appearances.

This is significantly less impressive than the record he boosted at Leipzig.

During his time at the Red Bull Arena, he scored 70 goals and assisted 56 in just 176 appearances in all competitions.

Simons, 22, was a club record arrival at Leipzig when he joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.

The German outfit forked out £43m to sign him permanently after an initial loan deal.

He is keen on a new challenge after Leipzig missed out on Champions League qualification last term.

They stuttered to a 7th-placed finish as they finished behind the likes of Mainz and Freiburg.

Simons scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in his 25 league appearances.

His desire to leave the club was made clear as he removed references to Leipzig from his social media.

He deleted the club name and the fact that he plays for them from his bio.

All that remains is that he is an ambassador for the charity Unicef and that he is sponsored by Puma.

He has left pictures of himself representing the club up, though.
