Becoming Cheltenham
The Cheltenham Festival began in 1860 and was originally held at Market Harborough, Leicestershire before moving to its namesake in 1861.
It moved to various locations before finally returning to Cheltenham in 1904.
The Gold Cup began as a supporting race for the Country Hurdle before becoming a championship race.
The competition’s popularity has soared over the years, making it one of the most anticipated events.

Michael O’Sullivan and Cheltenham
The Cheltenham Festival 2025 was particularly focused on Michael O’Sullivan.
Michael was an accomplished jockey who became an Irish Champion conditional jockey and won a day one double at Cheltenham 2023.
After falling from his horse on February 6, 2025, Michael was placed in an induced coma before passing away ten days later.
His loss was felt across the racing world, leading officials to name a race after him at Cheltenham 2025.
Michael’s brother Alan also competed at the competition.
The Gold Cup Race
The most anticipated race of Cheltenham 2025 is The Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Steeple Chase.
This event requires competitors to jump over 22 hurdles over a track measuring three miles and two furlongs.
The Gold Cup race begins at 4pm (BST) on March 14, 2025.
The final race of the competition is the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (0-145) which begins at 5.20pm.
