He underwent surgery after suffering a collapsed lung, four broken four ribs and fracturing a bone in his back.
But his wife Michelle has revealed doctors also discovered that Froome had suffered pericardial rupture – a tear to the sac that surrounds the heart.
Michelle told The Times: “It was obviously a lot more serious than some broken bones.
“He’s fine but it’s going to be a long recovery process. He won’t be riding a bike for a while.
“Chris is happy for you to share this because people need to understand what is going on.”
Froome, 40, crashed near Toulon, France, after clipping the kerb and colliding with a road sign at 30+mph.
He was taken to Sainte Anne Toulon military hospital – the highest level trauma centre for the region.
Froome is set to undergo a long recovery period and doctors will need to make sure there are no long-term cardiac issues.
The four-time Tour de France previously suffered a broken femur in a crash in 2019.
He was out of action for nine months and he has failed to win a race since.
Froome and Michelle have been married since 2014 and have two children – Kellan, 9 and Katie, 7.
