THREE cops have been injured after an unknown liquid was thrown at them in a city centre.

The three on-duty police officers had the unknown substance thrown on them while they were responding to reports of an affray in the centre of Leicester in the early hours of this morning.

Leicestershire Police believe the liquid may have also hit some members of the public who were in the King Street area when the substance was thrown (at around 4.50am).

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance and remains in police custody where he is being questioned by detectives.

While the liquid remains unknown, medical professionals do not believe there will be any lasting effects, cops said.

DI Jenny Tattersall said the liquid “significantly irritated” the skin and eyes of the officers, who were all rushed to hospital.

She confirmed the cops were “monitored over several hours” before being discharged this morning.

DI Tattersall said: “While we don’t know what the substance is at this stage and tests will be carried out, medical professionals have indicated that there will be no lasting damage.”

Cops are now appealing to those who have been affected by the substance as well as anyone who may have seen what happened.

DI Tattersall continued: “We know that there were other people in the area at the time the liquid was thrown and I’d like anyone who may had been contaminated with it to contact us.

“It may be on items of clothing, and that will be further evidence.

“Equally, if you were in the area and saw what happened in the incident, or in the moments before or after, I’m interested in hearing from you.

“We know from CCTV enquiries that there were a lot of people in the area at the time.”

You can contact the force online here or by calling 101, quoting incident number 181 of 24 August.
