The latest heavy-handed over-reach came as 30 or so Met police smashed their way into a Quaker meeting house to arrest and handcuff six young women discussing non-violent protest.
In the same week we learned parents Maxie Allen and Rosalind Levine were arrested at home by six Hertfordshire police after criticising their daughter’s primary school in a WhatsApp group.
They were detained for 11 hours and investigated for five weeks before the case was dropped without charges.
Children as young as nine have been interviewed and recorded by police for playground insults.
If you want cops to turn up mob-handed, it seems, all you have to do is report that someone has said something nasty you don’t agree with.
But report a burglary? No chance.
Why don’t police stick to stamping out crime, not free speech?
As for the obsession with “non-crime hate incidents”, the clue is in the name.
If there is no crime, or imminent threat of crime, it’s not a police matter.

Quite apart from the inflammatory unfairness, analysis by the Conservatives shows the extra Pre-Sentencing Reports that would be needed could cost taxpayers at least £18m a year.
That’s if the backlogged courts even have the capacity to do them.
Legislation to cancel this dangerous nonsense can’t come quickly enough.
It should be swiftly followed by the abolition of the ridiculous
Sentencing Council quango which thinks two-tier justice is acceptable.
