David and Elizabeth Wills were passing in Cumbria and gave chase with a cop in the back.

Businessman Mr Wills, 43, of Lytham St Annes, Lancs, said: “The officers seemed shell-shocked, one was totally dazed at the roadside. I said to the other ‘Get in, you’re going to lose your car’.

“He got into the back seat and we followed the police car which had been driving onto the M6 south at about 120mph.

“We couldn’t quite believe what was happening. At times it was like being in a Carry On film.

“When we arrived, this guy was beating the two police officers black and blue.

“One of the officers got out a can of pepper spray but ended up spraying all three of them, they were all gasping and badly affected by it.

“One officer managed to handcuff the man but the other was in the middle of the road, totally dazed.”

George got away but has now been jailed for 14 months.
