It took several minutes for the smoke to clear but play was able to get underway.

Bringing flares and pyrotechnics into football stadiums in the UK is prohibited.

FA rules state it is illegal for fans to possess pyrotechnics, and their use can lead to prosecution.

The rules state: “It is illegal to bring them into stadiums and there are consequences for anybody who breaks the law and ground regulations.

“Anyone caught possessing or using pyrotechnics will be reported to the police and prosecution could result in a permanent criminal record.

“The pitch must remain safe for players, managers and match officials, just as the stands should be for supporters.”

Palace fans similarly set off smoke flares ahead of their last FA Cup semi-final clash – against Chelsea in 2022.

The FA charge could lead to a fine for the Eagles.
