A DAD was killed and his son seriously injured when two opticians racing each other smashed head-on into their car, a court heard.

Rhys Jenkins, 41, was driving with the nine-year-old in Wales when the horror unfolded.

Jurors heard brothers Abubakr Ben Yusaf, 29, and Umar Ben Yusaf, 34, were racing each other in separate cars at the time.

Several witnesses reported the pair, who both opticians, were tailgating and dangerously overtaking minutes before the crash.

At the time, Abubakr Ben Yusaf was driving a BMW X3, while his brother was in an Audi S4.

One witness had been dangerously overtaken in his Transit van by the BMW whose driving was “reckless”.

The van driver was then overtaken by the sporty blue Audi, it was said.

When the witness reached a straight section of road, he saw the rear of the BMW “fishtail” as it lost control and swerved into the oncoming lane.

Prosecutor John Philpotts said the brothers were “effectively a car crash waiting to happen” and were “driving aggressively and dangerously”.

He added: “They were racing both were responsible.”

Mold Crown Court heard Abubakr Ben Yusaf was in the collision with Rhys’ vehicle.

Following the crash, the brothers were heard saying “come on, let’s go” before they fled the scene, jurors were told.

Tragically, rugby referee Rhys could not be saved and died on the road, while his son was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

The court heard the brothers would often do locum work in Wales and were driving 80 miles away from the home they share in Manchester.

They have both denied causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and causing death while uninsured.

The trial continues.
