DANNY ROHL has quit as Sheffield Wednesday manager as their cash crisis continues.

The Championship side reached an agreement for the 36-year-old ‘miracle’ worker’s departure after they were handed a three-window transfer ban by the EFL.

Rohl, who took charge in October 2023, has been allowed to leave the Owls for free and will be able to pursue other opportunities immediately.

However, the former Southampton and Bayern Munich assistant does not have a new job lined up.

Rohl wrote on Instagram: “A very special time is coming to an end and I am incredibly grateful for the experiences we have shared over 21 unforgettable months together.

“I thank our chairman for his faith and giving me the opportunity to take my first steps as a manager.

“I thank my players for such a successful collaboration, your tireless commitment and for being great humans. I am proud of all of your personal resilience and efforts.

“This summer has been difficult and, in the end, the club and I came to the mutual decision to part ways. I understand the different thoughts and reactions to everything that has been going on during these past few months.

“I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity. Even during the difficult moments and setbacks, I have always continued to feel the support from everyone. I take so many special moments away with me that will remain in my heart.

“We achieved a miracle together and that will always be something truly exceptional. I wish everyone associated with Wednesday my very best. I will never forget you. The Gaffer.”

Assistant Henrik Pedersen remains in South Yorkshire, having put pen to paper on a new deal earlier this month, and he is now the favourite to replace Rohl.

A Wednesday statement read: “Sheffield Wednesday can confirm the departure of manager Danny Rohl by mutual consent.

“The German coach joined the Owls in October 2023 and oversaw a successful survival mission to maintain our Championship status in his maiden season at Hillsborough.

“Wednesday then consolidated the following term, with Rohl steering the club to a mid-table finish in the second tier.

“Sascha Lense, Chris Powell, Neil Thompson and Sal Bibbo have also departed S6.

“Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Danny and his backroom team for their services and wish them well for the future.”

Rohl became the youngest boss in the EFL when he became Wednesday gaffer – his first managerial job.

The German secured Championship survival in the second tier for Wednesday before going on to finish 12th in his first and only full season at the club in the 2024/25 campaign.

He originally did not turn up for pre-season training earlier this summer due to the ongoing problems the club is facing, before eventually returning to work with a threadbare squad.

SunSport exclusively revealed how much-maligned Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri was refusing to sell the club for less than £100million.

This is despite the club’s crippling debt issues which saw payments to players in May and June.

Earlier this month, SunSport reported that Chansiri owes more than £4m in football debts — which will have to be paid by whoever buys the club.

The extent of the cash woes emerged during takeover bids by several groups in the recent weeks.

Earlier this month US businessman Tilman Fertitta was linked with the crisis club.

Fertitta, 68, is the US ambassador for Italy, an ally of Donald Trump and owns the Houston Rockets in the NBA.

Yesterday, it was announced that Callum Paterson – who helped Wednesday win promotion to the Championship in 2023 – had left the club, with the 30-year-old moving to join MK Dons in League Two.
