Heartfelt tributes from around the globe flooded in from the likes of Jota‘s Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and current manager Arne Slot.
Jota‘s time at Liverpool was incredibly successful, winning everything there was to win domestically.
In 2022, he won the FA Cup and League Cup before helping the Reds to the Premier League title in 2024/25.
The Portuguese forward scored 47 goals in 123 Premier League appearances for the Merseyside club and quickly established himself as a fan favourite at Anfield.
What are the lyrics to the Diogo Jota chant?
Liverpool supporters have a brilliant chant for Jota and the song will continue to ring around Anfield in his memory.
In Slot’s emotional tribute to the forward, the Reds boss vowed: “When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota. We will remember his goals and we will sing his song. For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten.”
And referencing the chant fans sang for the star, he finished his statement: “His name is Diogo.”
The song is sung to the tune of the 1969 track Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Here are the lyrics in full for the popular chant:
“Oh, he wears the No 20,
“He will take us to victory,
“And when he’s running down the left wing,
“He’ll cut inside and score for LFC,
“He’s a lad from Portugal,
“Better than Figo don’t you know,
“Oh, his name is Diogo!”
As well as wearing the No20, Jota played a starring role as the Reds stormed to their 20th league title last season to equal Manchester United’s all-time record.
A touching tribute on the Liverpool website described Jota as a “truly clutch figure” before announcing they would “immortalise” his No20 shirt number.
