Edwards, paid around £480,000 a year, was suspended in July 2023.

That month, wife Vicky revealed he was receiving hospital care for mental-health issues, as she identified him as the star exposed by The Sun for paying a young person for explicit pictures.

The Beeb has now said it paid for initial treatment in England, before it was aware of police charges.

It said disclosing further details could cause significant harm and distress to the star.

Separately, Edwards, 63, later pleaded guilty to possessing indecent pics of children and got a suspended jail term.
