Maddison missed the end of last season with a knee ligament injury.

The 28-year-old had only recently come on to the pitch before he went in for a routine challenge with Newcastle sub Anthony Elanga in the 83rd minute.

He then appeared to instantly feel some sort of pain, though he may not have even made contact with Elanga, and crumpled in a heap looking extremely distressed.

A stretcher was then called for and he was carried off with close mate Son, who had been subbed off 19 minutes earlier, holding a hand over his mouth in concern.

The Tottenham Hotspur faithful flocked to social media to express their concerns for the fan favourite.

One wrote on X: “James Maddison is down and looks in a lot of pain.

“This is a huge worry.”

Another said: “Oh man, that looks horrible for James Maddison.”

And another said: “Got to feel for James Maddison.

“Only just back, being stretchered off again.”

One remarked: “James Maddison looks like he’s gone down with a serious injury. Gutted for him.”

Another chimed in: “Get well soon, James.”

The match – which marked the end of Son Heung-Min’s time as a Spurs player – ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and Harvey Barnes.

And Maddison was full of praise for the departing Son, telling Coupang Play: “He told me a couple of days ago that he would be leaving Tottenham this summer.

“It is weird for me. Since I joined the Premier League, even with Leicester City, Sonny is Tottenham and Tottenham is Sonny.

“It is weird to think about Tottenham Hotspur without Heung-Min Son.

“It is a little bit emotional as he is a very close friend. I love him very dearly.

“He is an amazing human. I just don’t have enough time or words to tell you how I actually feel about him.

“I cannot say enough good words about him. I will miss him very dearly, but he is my friend for life.”
