Staff have been scrambled after a frantic hunt was launched to catch the rogue primate.
The public has been urged not to approach the monkey if they see it.
A statement from the Highland Wildlife Park read: “We can confirm one of our Japanese macaques escaped from its enclosure this morning.
“Our charity has set up a team who are working to secure the monkey safely and as quickly as possible.
“If members of the public encounter the macaque they should contact [email protected] with more information and do not approach it.”
Footage captured from the park shows the monkey wandering around after the escape.
It was even caught on camera climbing a fence to get to a bird feeder on a tree.
The park currently has a large troop of snow monkeys after success at breeding them.
They welcomed four new monkeys between April and July 2020 and another one was born in 2022.
What are Japanese macaques?
The Japanese macaque or snow monkey is the most northerly living non-human primate
They are the subject of many Buddhist stories and are represented in the Three Wise Monkeys maxim “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”
They are well known for bathing in natural hot springs to escape the cold, but this behaviour is unique to macaques in the Nagano mountains
They live in large social groups known as troops, which have a strict dominance hierarchy. A young female macaque will inherit her mother’s rank
