Major disruption was first reported in the early hours of this morning and is expected to last until the end of the day.
South Western Rail said that while some services will resume later today, they are likely to be subject to “delays and alterations”.
A spokesperson said: “Engineers are on site attempting to restore the use of the platforms.
“But with very few trains able to move in and out of London Waterloo and trains and crew already displaced, services across the network are severely disrupted.”
National Rail has tweeted that the disruption is “expected until 21.00”.
The announcement comes just days after Paddington station was evacuated after a fire alarm was sounded.
Great Western Railway said some lines were blocked and trains running to and from the station were being cancelled or delayed as a result.
A statement from National Rail said: “The fire alarm is sounding at London Paddington station. As a result, the station has been evacuated.
“Trains that run to / from / through will be disrupted and may be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 30 minutes. Disruption is expected until 8am.”
