Emergency crews rushed to the scene as thick smoke rose from the site.

Around 60 firefighters, nine fire engines, two brigade response vehicles and a hydraulic aerial platform were deployed to tackle the flames, which were tearing through three quarters of the 80-metre by 40-metre building.

A specialist high-volume water pumping unit was also sent to the scene.

A spokesperson said: “We were called to a significant fire involving a large building at a waste management facility in Meriden.

“Crews are working hard to protect the rest of the building, and liaising closely with on-site staff to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.”

As of 6pm, the incident was still ongoing.

No injuries have been reported.

Locals have been urged to avoid the area while crews continue to work.
