Eventually, the jet landed at London Gatwick airport after turning around over the English Channel.

A second flight was scheduled to take holidaymakers to Alicante from Gatwick at 9pm on Wednesday.

EasyJet has yet to reveal why the plane suddenly turned around after being in the air for just 30 minutes.

However, the brand did release a statement shortly after the first flight was grounded.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “We’re very sorry that your flight has now been diverted to London Gatwick airport.

“This is due to a passenger welfare issue.

“The disruption to your flight is outside of our control and is considered to be an extraordinary circumstance.”

EasyJet has been approached by The Sun for further comment.

The news comes after the brand scrapped a policy which automatically gave passengers hold luggage.

From August 7, holidaymakers only have an underseat cabin bag included in their fare.

Previously, jetsetters were allowed to check a 23kg bag into the hold for free.

A spokesperson for easyJet told The Sun: “We’re now giving customers the choice to decide whether they would like to pay for hold luggage, rather than it being automatically included.”

However, the new change will only affect easyJet’s city break packages and not passengers who buy a flight-only ticket.

A spokesperson from easyJet Holidays added: “We pride ourselves on delivering brilliant holidays at unbeatable prices, so we continuously listen to our customers on what would make our packages even better.

“Our customers have told us that 23kg for city breaks isn’t always necessary, which is why from 7 August 2024 our city break holidays will include flights and hotel accommodation as standard, and an option of adding large cabin bags and holding luggage for a fee.”

Meanwhile, a drunk passenger forced a Jet2 flight bound for Cyprus to land early in Cologne, Germany.

The “intoxicated” Brit was reportedly kicked, insulted and volleyed threats at her fellow passengers.

German Police released a statement – while the Brit awaited deportation – warning people to consider how much they drink before they fly.

A spokesperson said: “Even small amounts (of alcohol) can have a significantly stronger effect than on the ground due to the unique stresses of flying – such as lower air pressure and altered oxygen concentrations.

“Aggressive behaviour not only endangers other passengers but can also severely impair the safety of a flight.

“The Federal Police therefore urges responsible consumption of alcohol in air travel.”
