Emergency crews were scrambled to the scene after receiving scores of 999 calls about the incident.

Five fire engines were deployed to the street and police sealed off the area.

A man and woman had to be rescued from the pile of rubble where the house once stood.

The pair were rushed to hospital after being dug out from the remains of the home.

Tragically, police confirmed an 84-year-old man died after the blast.

Pictures show bricks and other debris scattered across the street, with car windows smashed by items sent flying by the explosion.

Treasured possessions were pictured scattered around the remains of the building.

Neighbours last night told how they could feel their homes shaking when the explosion happened while others heard it while in a cinema in nearby Wester Hailes.

A probe has been launched into the cause of the tragic blast, with cops, fire crews and gas workers still on the scene this morning.
