England U21 vs Germany U21 preview
Defending champions England face a decisive showdown with Germany on Wednesday as they bid to book their place in the knockout stages of the European Under-21 Championship.
The Young Lions head into their final Group B fixture knowing that only a win will guarantee top spot – though a draw would still be enough to see them through to the quarter-finals, regardless of the outcome in the group’s other clash between Slovenia and the Czech Republic.
Last time out, Lee Carsley’s side were left frustrated by a goalless draw with Slovenia, despite dominating much of the contest.
England enjoyed 64.7% possession, registered 41 touches in the opposition penalty area, and fired 20 shots – yet managed just three on target.
That stalemate leaves England second in the group, trailing leaders Germany by two points.
A loss could prove disastrous if Slovenia beat the Czechs and overturn a goal difference deficit, potentially sending the holders crashing out.
Germany, meanwhile, have already sealed their spot in the quarter-finals following back-to-back wins, showcasing the firepower that made them pre-tournament favourites. Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade has been particularly prolific, bagging four goals so far.
The Germans are unbeaten in 17 matches across all competitions (W14, D3). However, they’ll be wary of the fact their last defeat came at the hands of England in 2023.
