England vs Italy preview
We go again…
After their heart-stopping quarter-final victory over Sweden, the Lionesses are back in action for Tuesday’s semi-final showdown against Italy in Geneva.
More than seven million viewers tuned in to watch Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang help the defending champions fight back from a 2–0 deficit.
England then won a chaotic penalty shootout 3–2 to book their place in the final four and keep their hopes of a second successive Euros title alive.
It also means they’ve now reached the semi-finals at six consecutive major tournaments.
Sarina Wiegman’s side did it the hard way in that epic quarter-final.
But there’s reason to believe this could be a more straightforward affair against a side ranked 13th in the world – seven places below Sweden.
England are unbeaten in their last five matches against Italy – all friendlies – winning four of them, including a dominant 5–1 victory in February 2024 in Spain.
As for Italy, this is their best performance at a Euros since 1997, when they lost 2–0 to Germany in the final.
They won just one of their three group matches in this tournament – against Belgium – and required a 90th-minute winner to edge past Norway in the quarter-finals. It was only their second knockout-stage victory at a major tournament since 1997.

As mentioned, the Lionesses completely steamrolled Italy in a friendly back in February 2024 – and there’s every reason to believe it could be a similar story on Tuesday.
England dominated that night, enjoying nearly 70% possession, recording 20 shots (12 on target), and limiting their opponents to just two efforts on goal.
Sarina Wiegman’s side have a wealth of experience in high-pressure knockout ties and should be more than capable of finding the net a few times against an Italy side that has conceded in each of their last three and hasn’t played a semi-final since 1997.
