Despite the humiliating scoreline, Moldova goalkeeper Cristian Avram has revealed a consoling four-word message Haaland gave to him.

Speaking after the defeat, Avram said: “I spoke to Erling.

“He said ‘It’s not my fault,’ and that he just had to keep trying to score because of the goal difference. I understand him.

“It’s part of the game. He wanted to keep fighting.”

The emphatic win put Norway in control of Group I as they bid to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

They have a perfect record of five wins from five, but are still peering over their shoulders looking at Italy and Israel on nine points – though the Euro 2020 winners have a game in hand as well.

For Haaland, 25, it was the perfect warm-up for Sunday’s Manchester Derby, as he improved his Norway record to 48 goals in 45 games.

And it will also prove to be a scary warning for whichever goalkeeper lines up in the opposition net at the Etihad.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim could call on £18million deadline day signing Senne Lammens to make his debut or stick with Altay Byaindir who is yet to keep a clean sheet across three Premier League games.

Haaland has a strong record against the Red Devils, scoring five goals in eight appearances – although he has not scored in any of the last four games he has featured in against United.

City boss Pep Guardiola will be hoping Haaland’s international blitz will carry over into the league to help City jump back in front of their cross-town rivals.

The Cityzens are currently 13th in the table with one win and two defeats to their name, putting them a point behind United who have recorded a loss, draw and win so far.

But changes could also be on the cards for City following their own deadline day arrival in the form of £26m arrival Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The 26-year-old did not cover himself in glory while playing for Italy against Israel during the break, but will compete with James Trafford for the No1 spot under Guardiola.
