Good vs Vlad

THE disintegration of relations between Ukraine and the US last week would have had Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin smirking with delight, so the Prime Minister was right to say that we are standing at a crossroads in history.

And let no one doubt how dangerous a position it is.

Sir Keir Starmer’s task now, for the security of Britain and Europe, is to get our allies to agree on the next steps and to take them with us.

So it was worrying to hear him say that there are still European nations reluctant to offer the support that Ukraine needs; still happy to outsource their own security and let others foot the bill.

Britain and its key European partners can no longer afford to do that and it was at least encouraging to hear that more countries have agreed to join a “coalition of the willing”.

So was the Prime Minister’s assertion that he was moving forward with a plan with the full expectation of support from America.

But, as the PM also said, the time for talking is over.

Europe needs to act decisively now in Ukraine’s defence — and its own — if there is to be a chance of seeing off the threat from Putin and securing a just and lasting peace.

Gail farce

POSH bakery chain Gail’s likes to champion its eco credentials and boasts of leading a “sustainable baking revolution”.

But its slogan, “Fixing food waste, one bake at a time”, is hard to swallow when you know how much grub it throws out each day.

While it gives some leftover products to charity and recycles others, unsold dairy, meat and fish products that could feed the homeless are routinely jettisoned because Gail’s is too posh to refrigerate them.

It might affect the taste, they say.

Well it certainly leaves a nasty taste in the mouth when you watch it being dumped, as The Sun discovered.

Perhaps Gail’s slogan should be: “Adding to food waste, one bin bag at a time.”

Shopping maul

A REPORT warning of yet more job cuts in shops, pubs and restaurants should set alarm bells ringing for Rachel Reeves.

Business activity has dropped more than a quarter in just three months, says the Confederation of British Industry, and that’s before the National Insurance hike the Chancellor announced in her October Budget comes into effect.

So much for growth as a priority.

The hospitality and service industries are the canary in the coalmine for our economy and they are already choking.

Time for a rethink, Chancellor.
