The altercation happened after Everton faced Liverpool at Anfield in 1998, in a match that ended 1-1 with both Ferguson and Paul Ince on the scoresheet for their respective clubs.

Ferguson revealed the incident in an interview with The Telegraph with Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher.

Carragher provoked the memory reminiscing on his first encounter with Ferguson in a Merseyside derby.

During the match Ferguson had thrown Ince to the ground after a coming together off the ball and was offered out by the Liverpool skipper.

Ferguson explained: “Someone told me that he said he’d see me after the game in the players’ lounge. So I went in and I was waiting for him.

“I was young and I wasn’t thinking too much. But I just thought I’ll see if he comes in.

“I was waiting and the Everton bus left without me. So I was standing there and the bus had gone and left me at Anfield!”

When Ince eventually arrived to face Ferguson, the two smoothed over the episode and enjoyed a few pints in the players’ lounge.

Carragher then revealed that he and Ferguson ended up in the same city bar after the match.

Ferguson remembered: “Aye, on Bold Street. That was the last game before I had a suspension and I’d scored and had a decent game, so it was OK for me to go out.”

Ferguson retired at Everton in 2006 after making over 250 appearances for the club and has gone on to have two spells as interim head coach of the Toffees in 2019 and 2022.

Most recently he managed Scottish club Inverness Caledonian Thistle from September 2023 to October 2024 when he was sacked as the club went into administration.
