Leverkusen lost their first match 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim before throwing away a 3-1 lead away against 10-man Werder Bremen to draw 3-3.

According to Kicker in Germany, Ten Hag is on the brink of being fired and the club have refused to publicly back him.

Ten Hag replaced former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso – following a remarkable run as Leverkusen boss.

Alonso led the club to an unbeaten domestic double in 2024 – and also reached the Europa League final where they lost to Atalanta.

Alonso followed that up with a second-placed finish last season before leaving to return to Madrid – this time in the dugout.

Ten Hag led Ajax to three consecutive Dutch titles before taking over at United in 2022 after taking over from Ralf Rangnick – who had replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis.

But the Dutchman lasted two-and-half years before being replaced by Ruben Amorim in October of 2024.

That is despite winning the FA Cup only five months prior – leaving Old Trafford with United in 14th winning, just four of their first 14 matches that season.

Amorim kept hold of his job this summer despite the club finishing in a 15th – United’s worst-ever Prem finish.

Ten Hag meanwhile joined Leverkusen in May after a seven-month absence from the game.

His side sit 12th in the table and the under-fire 55-year-old said: “The players aren’t ready.

“We have a new team and some of the players aren’t at all fit enough to play. The team didn’t function at all during the final stage of the game.

“That’s just the way it is. They need to bring more intensity and get fitter in order to meet my standards.”
