Experienced skydiver, 62, dies after horror mid-air collision despite landing under ‘working parachute’

AN EXPERIENCED skydiver has died after being fatally injured in a horrifying mid-air collision in Massachusetts.

Robert Szabo, 62, died three days after crashing into another skydiver while gliding down on Saturday afternoon.

Local authorities named the victim, originally from Connecticut, and confirmed the terrifying ordeal at Jumptown Skydiving in Orange.

The skydiving firm said Robert was injured in the collision and landed at Orange Municipal Airport property with a “fully functioning parachute”.

They said: “On the afternoon of October 4, there was a midair collision between two experienced skydivers.

“The injured jumper landed on airport property under a fully functioning parachute.”

Authorities said: “Szabo was taken by ambulance to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, where he remained until he died Tuesday evening.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.”

Local cops continue to probe the circumstances of the victim’s death.

Experienced skydiver Robert was listed as a staff member at Connecticut Parachutists, a skydiving club in Ellington.

He had been a passionate skydiver since 2000 according to the organisation’s website.

And he was also a coordinator for the “Accelerated Freefall” program.

Robert earned his skydiving license in 2003 and took part in over 5,000 jumps across the globe, according to his obituary.

The website states: “Rob’s accumulated skydiving knowledge has made him an asset to jumpers of all experience levels.”

An online obituary for Robert said he was a “cherished member of the Jumptown and Connecticut Parachutists families”.

It read: “Rob tragically lost his life following a skydiving accident at Jumptown on October 4th, 2025.

“Despite the best efforts of his medical team, and with MRI results confirming a grim prognosis, Rob’s decision was made to allow nature to take its course.

The tribute continued: “He passed away peacefully in the arms of his close friend, Bryce Painter, on October 7th, at approximately 10:40 pm.

“Rob’s untimely departure is an immeasurable loss to all who knew him”
