AN EYE-WATERING £1 billion has been spent on wasted wind power this year despite Ed Miliband vowing to cut bills by £300.

The huge sum is spent switching the turbines off then paying other sources such as gas-fired plants to be used as a replacement as the network can’t cope.

It contrasts with the UK only spending £734 million at the same point this time last year.

Household bills are up by £15 a year for the switch off.

The £1 billion figure was calculated by the Wasted Wind tracking website.

It calls into question Ed Milibands’s plans to double onshore wind by 2030.

The Tories hit out last night as the latest price cap came into force yesterday which sees the typical household pay £1,755 on energy bills which is up from £1,720.

Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho said: “We have been warning about this.

“Ed Miliband’s plans to build more wind farms than ever before will mean Brits spending eye-watering sums just to switch off wind farms when there’s too much wind.

“These costs are going to quadruple to £8 billion a year because of Labour’s targets. Britain cannot afford Ed Miliband.”

MIliband has also been slammed for putting a ban on fracking – as Reform insist they will reverse the decision.

The Energy Secretary came under fire over vowing to permanently ban the method of extracting oil and gas from shale rock.

He made the announcement at the Labour party conference in Liverpool where he told activists to “send this bunch of frackers packing”.

The Cabinet Minister used his speech to launch an attack on Reform who will immediately make a u-turn on the decision if they came to power.

But Reform deputy leader Richard Tice said:  “Ed Miliband negligently announces total ban on valuable shale gas  opportunities. Reform UK⁩ will immediately reverse this when we win power.

“Local Gas creates jobs & cheap energy for lower bills.”
