DEFENCE chiefs spent £6million ringing the AA after 11,000 vehicles, weighing up to 25-tons, broke down or crashed.

The service averaged four £500 callouts a day to repair or rescue decrepit MoD vehicles, with one towed back to Britain from Morocco.

Among the vehicles involved since 2015 were 50-year old Spartan and Scimitar light tanks, vintage Land Rovers, and limousines for whisking Top Brass between bases.

A source said the deal covers all vehicles “up to and including the 25-ton Warrior” — which entered service in 1987.

Details emerged in a parliamentary answer to MPs.

A separate Armed Forces report showed that almost 800 vehicles were involved in accidents between April 2021 and March 2022.

Former intelligence officer Colonel Phil Ingram, said: “This is a shocking waste of money. It is yet another example of the MoD not really knowing what they are contracting or caring what the costs are as no one will be held accountable.”

The MoD claimed the recovery and repair system balanced “safety, efficiency and capability, with value for money”.
