The commentators debated where the source of the glass came from.
They determined that it must have come from the start-finish box above the chequered line.
Track stewards were ushered in with brooms to sweep up the mess and drivers made their way back to the pit lane.
It later emerged that one of the panels where the chequered flag is normally waved had broken.
After the glass was cleared, testing commenced under a green flag again before being stopped again.
But this, it was a planned and precautionary test.
