However, the ground will undergo a complete rebuild before it kicks off in five years.

The land on which the original stadium sat for 68 years is now empty.

All four stands have been demolished with plans in place for a new-look stadium.

Construction of the new ground is expected to start in the coming months.

The redeveloped stadium is penciled in for a capacity of 42,500 spectators.

Discussing the design, César Azcárate, director of sports and events at IDOM – the company working on the rebuild – said: “Focusing on its flows, we have weathered the stadium and the roof, modeling them as fluid and dynamic elements.

“The piece is deformed by drawing concave shapes in the north and south areas of the volume, giving greater amplitude to the urban space, and convex shapes in the east and west areas, showing the Eduardo Ibarra square and the Paseo de Isabel la Católica.”

La Romareda sits in the heart of Zaragoza and is the home of Real Zaragoza.

The club currently compete in the second tier of Spanish football and games are temporarily being played at the Ibercaja Stadium while the rebuild is happening.

La Romareda Stadium hosted three games at the 1982 World Cup between Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland and Honduras.
