Staff quelled the violence and the Category A prison in Co Durham was put into lockdown.
A source said: “It went off very quickly and violently.
“The mostly Muslim group attacked a load of guys from the North West who fought back.
“Weapons were being used, including weights and dumbbells and the whole prison went into lockdown.
“It is terrifying for the staff who feared a repeat of violence like the Abedi attack – but had to race into the fray anyway.
“They had dog teams out as well but did not have to use them.
“Luckily it was not as pre-planned as the Abedi attack and staff got on top of it pretty quickly and pinned down and cuffed the main attackers.
“But it is awful for them that it happened so soon after the last one.
“The whole prison is like a tinderbox.”
Abedi, 28 — serving at least 55 years for helping brother Salman plan his 2017 gig suicide bombing that killed 22 — launched his attack on April 12.
The Prison Service said both incidents were being investigated.
