SIR Keir Starmer was under fire last night for saying raising taxes would stifle growth — despite already clobbering businesses.

The PM’s remarks came as employers struggle with increased National Insurance contributions and face hiring freezes.

They were also seen as a thinly veiled attack on his deputy Angela Rayner who has called for a string of new taxes.

He told the BBC: “The question is how do we grow the economy and create wealth.

“I don’t think you can tax your way to growth. We have high tax as it is.”

But Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said: “Keir Starmer says you can’t tax your way to growth – yet his government has slapped British businesses with a £25 billion Jobs Tax.

“As an entrepreneur who’s built businesses from the ground up, I know it’s enterprise – not the taxman – that drives economic growth.

Labour’s reckless tax hikes are choking growth, costing jobs, and punishing the very businesses we rely on to power our economy.

“Keir Starmer can’t even get his top team to agree on tax policy. While Angela Rayner plots tax raids behind closed doors, Rachel Reeves’ economic credibility is in tatters.”

Ms Rayner wrote to the Chancellor Rachel Reeves earlier this year proposing eight tax hikes on savers and high earners in a bid to raise up to £4 billion.
