A YOUNG girl was killed in a fireball crash when a Porsche driver made a “deliberate” U-turn and drove the wrong way down the motorway.

Faye Dawson, three, was travelling home from seeing the Blackpool illuminations with her mum Beth when the horror unfolded.

An inquest was told Terence Unsworth deliberately positioned his car in the wrong direction on the M6 after performing an “unfathomable” U-turn.

Beth had no chance of avoiding the Porsche as it drove head-on towards her in her Vauxhall Meriva.

Terence’s car then burst into a “fireball” that resulted in his death following the November 19 horror.

Little Faye, who was in the back of her mum’s car, was also killed.

Describing the moments leading up to the crash, PC Rachel Carberry said: “He has entered the sliproad correctly then when he got to the give way lines he has stopped, indicated and done a U-turn.

“It was a clear and obvious turn in the wrong direction.”

A post mortem found Terence had suffered acute myocardial thrombus – a blood clot in the heart – and his coronary arteries were “severely narrowed”.

But the inquest was told any potential side effects could not account for his actions.

The road also had no defects and was well-lit at the time of the crash. There were also no faults found in Terence’s car.

Returning a conclusion of road traffic accident, Assistant Coroner Richard Taylor said: “He doesn’t meander. He stops and simply turns. It seems to be a deliberate action.”

The coroner continued: “I think the difficulty with instances such as these is that we would all like to understand Mr Unsworth’s decision-making but it seems that we will never be able to do that.

“I have seen the CCTV and there doesn’t seem to be anything unusual about his driving except for the decision, not only to indicate to turn right, but to perform a U-turn and proceed down the motorway the wrong way.”
